Peu aprés avoir quitté MusicMan, Leo Fender fonda G&L en 1980, en s'associant à George Fullerton. Un but : fabriquer les guitares et basses électriques les plus performantes au monde. G&L pour George et Leo. Quand Fullerton dut quitter G&L, le nom de la société fut modifié pour devenir : "Guitars by Leo". Après le décès de Leo Fender en 1991, sa veuve Phyllis Fender confia les rênes de l'entreprise à "BBE Sound" sous la direction de John C. McLaren. Leo avait déjà mené des pourparlers avec ce dernier, et avait déclaré que John McLaren serait à même de diriger G&L vers le succès. Les négociations reposaient sur les points suivants : George Fullerton doit occuper un poste de conseiller permanent, Phyllis Fender par sa présence en tant que dirigeante honoraire doit garder vivant l'esprit de son époux.

Aujourd'hui, G&L développe la production comme l'aurait voulu Leo. Son impact est tellement important que son bureau est resté tel quel depuis qu'il l'a quitté, et c'est même devenu quasiment un lieu de pèlerinage pour les inconditionnels. Les salariés de G&L, sa "Famille", construisent les instruments avec le même respect, amour du détail et haut degré de compétence. Sans pour autant rester fermés aux évolution! Léo Fender a toujours adoré le changement et les nouveautés, et G&L respecte aussi cet état d'esprit.
